Most Drivers Don’t Know if Their Tyres are Illegal!

Did you know that most drivers on UK roads are unaware of the legal requirements for their tyres? According to a recent report by the RAC, a staggering number of vehicles could be putting lives at risk due to worn or damaged tyres.

Tyre safety is crucial, so let’s take a look at the report and how you can ensure your tyres are roadworthy.

What Did The RAC Report Find?

We hate to say it, but this report found some pretty scary statistics about tyre safety.

  • Two thirds of drivers don’t know the legal minimum tread depth for tyres.
  • One in five vehicles has at least one tyre below the legal limit
  • Many drivers only check their tyres when prompted by an MOT or service, meaning issues could go on for months without being noticed
  • A significant number of motorists admitted they wouldn’t know how to check their tread depth or tyre condition properly.

These findings highlight the importance of regular tyre safety checks and the need for increased awareness about tyre safety standards.

Why Tyre Safety Matters

Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle that touches the road. They play a vital role in:

  • Maintaining grip on wet or icy surfaces
  • Ensuring stability when cornering
  • Reducing braking distances in emergencies

Driving with illegal or maintained tyres isn’t just a safety hazard – it could also lead to hefty fines and penalty points on your license. Just take a look at the tyres below. You can clearly see how the rubber has perished, with cords showing. This is what a dangerous tyre looks like and luckily, we replaced them both right away.

Tyre Conditions That are Illegal

Under UK law, tyres must meet the following requirements:

  • Tread depth: the minimum tread depth is 1.6mm. Anything less can result in a £2,500 fine per tyre and three penalty points
  • Condition: tyres must be free from significant cracks, bulges or cuts
  • Pressure: incorrect tyre pressure can lead to uneven wear and reduced fuel efficiency

How to Check Your Tyres

Staying on top of tyre maintenance doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming. Here’s a quick checklist:

  1. Measure the tread depth: use a 20p coin – insert it into the tread grooves. If the out band is visible, it’s time to replace your tyres
  2. Inspect for damage: look for cracks, cuts or bulges on each of the tyres
  3. Check tyre pressure: refer to your vehicle’s handbook or the sticker inside the driver’s door for the correct pressures.
  4. Don’t forget the spare! If you do have a spare, make sure it’s ready for use and not damaged or underinflated
