We fix so many of these Ecoboost engines that we’ve put together fixed pricing so you know exactly where you stand. Here’s a couple of examples of our fixed prices.

Within the motor trade, these engines are known as EcoBoom as they are so prone to failure. But, with proper servicing and care from our experts, you can enjoy driving safely.

Signs Your Wet Belt Needs Replacing

  • Noises: you can expect to hear some squealing, grinding, ticking or rattling noises coming from your engine. These will be heard when starting the engine or accelerating.
  • Check Engine Light: the light may come on if there is a problem with the wet belt.
  • Low Oil Pressure: if the oilways become blocked by debris, the oil pressure will drop
  • Oil Leaks: leaks around the wet belt can be a indicator that this has failed
  • Engine Performance: you may feel your vehicle misfiring, perform erractically at high speeds or run poorly when idling.

If just one of these applies to you – it’s best to get in contact with our team ASAP!

Wet Belt Repairs for EcoBoost Engines

Every engine relies on either a timing belt or a timing chain to maintain operational synchronisation between the crankshaft and the camshafts.

Traditionally, timing belts ran outside the engine, while timing chains operated internally, bathed in oil. However, since 2012, there has been a shift in this tradition. Initially led by Ford, and now adopted by more manufacturers, the timing belt is being placed inside the engine, where it is immersed in oil – introducing the “wet belt engine.”

What Vehicles Have a Wet Belt Engine?

Ford pioneered the EcoBoost wet belt engine, using it in popular models such as the Fiesta, Focus, and the ever-reliable Transit van. Soon, other manufacturers followed suit, including the French PSA Group (covering brands like Peugeot, Vauxhall, Citroën, Opel, and DS). In 2021, the Fiat business merged with PSA to form Stellantis, adding more vehicles to the list.

Is the Wet Belt Engine a Good Thing?

While the concept of a wet belt engine isn’t inherently bad, it does come with its challenges.

These engines require rigorous service schedules, the correct oil, and strict adherence to service intervals. Even with these precautions, issues can still arise.

This is why we are stressing the wet belt repairs must be done by a reputable garage who has invested in the correct training and tooling to perform these complex jobs.

How Long Does a Wet Belt Last?

Manufacturer service schedules often suggest that a wet belt should last over five years or 100,000 miles. However, real-world experiences tell a different story. We have seen our fair share of vehicles urgently needing repair after their wet belts have failed.

Shockingly, many of these wet belts fail within three years and as little as 30,000 miles.

Top Reason for Wet Belt Failure:

Over time, the wet belt sheds fibres, which contaminate the oil. If these fibres aren’t flushed out through regular oil changes, they can clog the oil pump strainer, reducing oil pressure and flow.

Wet belts require specific grades of oil. Using incorrect oil can prevent the belt from being properly lubricated, causing it to degrade rapidly.

Many many garages are reporting premature belt failure where the teeth of the belt shear away and clog the engines oil ways causing catastrophic engine failure

Although manufacturers advertise long service intervals, the reality is that regular servicing is essential to protect your engine. Extended oil use can fail to protect the wet belt adequately.

When Should I Change My Wet Belt?

Now! Prevention is always better than cure. Our advice is to:

  • Change your oil every year or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first
  • Change your wet belt every 30,000 to 40,000 miles

Wet belt engines are failing all across Europe and good quality second-hand units are hard to come by. Taking care of your engine now is crucial.
