EV Repairs & Servicing - Ewhurst & Gatwick

Electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than their petrol or diesel counterparts, but they’re not maintenance-free, and when something does go wrong, the systems involved mean that repairs need to be handled by technicians with the right training and equipment.

At CCM, we service and repair electric and hybrid vehicles across a growing range of models, combining the diagnostic capability needed for modern EV systems with over 30 years of vehicle repair and maintenance experience.

It’s a common misconception that only the supplying dealer can service or repair an electric vehicle. That simply isn’t the case, and unlike some garages that have been slow to adapt to the shift toward electrification, we’ve invested in the training and equipment needed to look after these vehicles properly. We’ll also do it for considerably less than a main dealer.

Studies suggest EV owners spend around 50% less on maintenance than petrol or diesel drivers fewer parts means fewer things to wear out. But routine attention is still needed, and it still needs to be done correctly.

EV servicing

EVs still require regular attention – just different attention. Servicing focuses on the systems that do wear: brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, battery cooling systems, and cabin air filtration. We carry out EV servicing in line with manufacturer recommendations, tailored to your vehicle’s age, mileage, and condition. Servicing in line with the manufacturer schedule also helps preserve your warranty.

Common EV maintenance items

Tyres

Going electric doesn’t lessen your tyre requirements. EV tyres often wear faster than those on equivalent petrol cars due to the additional vehicle weight and instant torque delivery. Pressure and tread depth still need regular checking, and we’d always recommend a four-wheel alignment check when tyres are changed – incorrect alignment accelerates wear and affects handling.

Brake fluid

EVs use regenerative braking for most everyday slowing, but conventional friction brakes take over at low speeds and in emergency situations, and brake fluid is still required to engage them. Contaminated brake fluid reduces braking efficiency significantly. Most manufacturers recommend a change every two years or 24,000 miles, regardless of how little the physical brakes have been used.

Brakes

Regenerative braking means brake pads and discs on EVs typically wear more slowly than on petrol vehicles, but they do still wear, and they still need periodic inspection. If you notice pulling to one side or any unusual noise when braking, get it checked promptly.

Battery cooling

EV batteries generate significant heat during use, and the cooling system that manages battery temperature needs periodic attention. Coolant flush intervals vary between manufacturers; check your manual, or give us a call and we’ll advise for your specific model.

General wear items

Windscreen wipers, pollen filters, air conditioning – all the everyday wear items that need attention on any vehicle apply equally to EVs. Most are quick and straightforward to deal with.

MOT

All vehicles require an annual MOT once they reach three years old —EVs included. The emissions element of the test doesn’t apply to pure electric vehicles, and with fewer mechanical components overall, the chances of MOT-related issues are generally lower than with a combustion engine car.

High-voltage systems

Work on high-voltage battery packs and drive motors requires specialist EV training and equipment. We’ll always be transparent about what we can handle in-house and, where specialist high-voltage work is required beyond our current scope, we’ll advise you honestly on the best course of action.

Hybrid vehicles

Hybrids retain a combustion engine alongside the electric motor, which means all conventional maintenance requirements still apply – oil changes, timing belts, exhaust, and so on – in addition to the hybrid-specific components. Don’t assume a hybrid needs less attention than a petrol car; it needs different attention. Our hybrid servicing and repair capability is available at our Gatwick site.
