Car Air Conditioning - Ewhurst, Gatwick & Cranleigh

A car’s air conditioning system does more than keep you cool in summer.

It demists windows faster than heating alone, filters airborne particles from the cabin, and maintains a comfortable environment that reduces driver fatigue on longer journeys. When it stops working properly – or simply isn’t as cold as it used to be – the most common cause is straightforward: the refrigerant gas has depleted, and the system needs a regas.

At CCM, we carry out air conditioning servicing and repairs across all makes and models. A regas is typically completed within the hour, and we stock both of the main refrigerant gases used in modern vehicles, including the latest R1234YF, so we can service the full range of cars on the road today.

Why does air conditioning stop working?

The refrigerant that powers your air conditioning system cycles continuously between gas and liquid states as it flows around the system. During this process, small amounts escape, which is why, over time, every system eventually needs topping up. It’s not a fault; it’s simply how the system works.

In some cases, faster-than-usual refrigerant loss points to a leak or crack in the pipework, which we’ll investigate before refilling the system. Leaving a depleted system too long isn’t just uncomfortable – it can cause pipes to crack and components to seize, turning a straightforward regas into a more involved repair.

What the service involves

  • Withdraw any remaining refrigerant and measure the quantity – a very low reading can indicate a leak or underlying issue
  • Check the system for leaks
  • Recharge with fresh refrigerant to the correct level for your vehicle
  • System test to confirm correct operation
  • The whole process takes under an hour in most cases.

DIY regas kits

Regas kits are available online, but we’d strongly advise against using them. The refrigerant gas can cause serious freezer burns to skin, mixing old and new refrigerant risks a dangerous chemical reaction, and the old gas must be disposed of correctly – it can’t simply be vented. It’s a job best left to technicians with the right equipment.

When should air conditioning be serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend an air conditioning service every two years as a general guide. It’s worth staying on top of – a well-maintained system uses less fuel, demists more effectively in winter, and is far less likely to develop the more expensive faults that come with prolonged neglect.

Signs your air conditioning needs attention:

  • Blowing warm or only mildly cool air
  • Unpleasant or musty smell when the system is switched on
  • Reduced airflow from the vents
  • Windows taking longer than usual to demist in cold weather
  • Visible oily residue around air con components

What we offer at CCM

  • Leak detection and investigation
